The Velvet bean (Mucuna) is a very good cover crop. It covers the ground, protects it from intense sun rays and heavy rain drops thereby preventing soil erosion and conserving soil moisture. It improves soil fertility by fixing nitrogen in the soil and producing a lot of organic matter, which can be used as mulch or incorporated into the soil as green manure. The Mucuna vines can also be harvested and used as fodder for livestock to increase milk yield.
Pineapples planted with bananas and beans - all crops benefit from each other. Bananas provide mild shade to pineapples to reduce the impact of sunshine. Pineapples are spaced closely and cover a big share of the ground thereby maintaining appreciable soil moisture which benefits the bananas. Beans suppress weeds and also fix nitrogen in the soil which improves soil fertility.
Organic Farming provides a better option for healthy vegetables good for your health.
